About the MPP Incubator

The problem

The marine plastic waste issue is caused by multiple issues within the plastics value chain: from the moment a manufacturer decides to create a single-use plastic product; to the moment someone purchases and disposes of this incorrectly; or until an uncollected piece of plastic waste is blown into the ocean. The high amounts of plastic waste pollution can have significant impacts on ecosystems and human health.

These issues are prevalent in Mombasa County – a critical hotspot to Kenya’s plastic waste pollution – and especially its informal settlements, which are at the forefront of plastic waste pollution due to a lack of formal waste management services.

There are opportunities for innovation to help tackle these issues and reduce plastic waste in Mombasa County. The MPP Incubator, aims to support these efforts through the development of sustainable innovative solutions.

What the MPP incubator offered to businesses

The MPP Incubator worked with nine teams from the initial phase of MPP to progress their working prototypes into sustainable businesses, including the three winning teams. Collaborating closely with Mombasa County partners, the MPP Incubator offered customised coaching, mentoring, and training.

As well as this, seed-funding was provided several times throughout the incubator.

Why an Incubator?

Incubators are programs that give early-stage businesses access to mentorship, investors and other support to help them to become established. Benefits of incubator programs include:

  • Addressing the ‘pioneer gap’: Business incubators, as well as accelerators and impact grants, help to address the investment gap in early-stage ventures,  as they provide early-stage entrepreneurs with the support they need to move from idea to formalisation of their business.
  • Providing tailored support at the right place and right time: We learned that the innovators supported as part of the initial phase of MPP face a common set of barriers. Teams shared that tailored support would help them achieve sustainability.
  • Strengthening impact measurement: Our research suggests that insufficient data is a contributing factor to the current state of inadequate infrastructure for collecting and recycling plastic waste at the source, particularly in informal settlements within Mombasa County. Taking an evidence-based impact approach as part of our evaluation process will help to bridge this gap.
