Announcing the second phase of the Mombasa Plastics Prize!
05/10/2023
The Mombasa Plastics Prize (MPP) is pleased to announce the start of a brand new phase of the challenge – the MPP Incubator.
After the huge success of the initial phase (the Mombasa Plastics Prize, which ran from September 2022 to May 2023), it was decided that there would be a second phase, which will support teams who took part in the initial challenge prize to make their projects even more impactful.
As members of the MPP Incubator, the teams will gain access to financial and capacity-building support, including invaluable mentoring and training which will help them to grow their ideas into sustainable businesses. From there, the hope will be that they are able to significantly impact the mitigation of marine plastic waste pollution in Mombasa County’s informal settlements.
How is the new phase different?
While the Mombasa Plastics Prize (MPP) was a challenge prize – a competition that offers a reward to whoever can solve a problem first or most effectively – the purpose of the incubator is to build on the ideas developed in the challenge prize.
To achieve this goal, the teams selected to participate will:
- Formalise their businesses and establish their operational structure.
- Refine their business ideas to generate sustainable and viable business plans.
- Increase the capabilities and skill sets of their teams.
- Develop and implement their working prototypes to be market-ready.
- Establish partnerships with the innovation ecosystem.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of their solution on marine plastic waste pollution.
Which teams are taking part?
-
Twende Green Ecocycle
Twende Green Ecocycle aims to promote sustainable development by recycling marine plastic waste from informal settlements into school eco-desks and was the first place winner of the initial Mombasa Plastics Prize phase. Their company uses advanced recycling technology to transform discarded plastic waste into durable, high-quality school lockable eco-desk that meets the needs of both students and teachers. They are committed to making a positive impact on the environment, while also supporting education development and creating employment opportunities for the local community.
-
Plastic Taka Creatives
Plastic Taka Creatives is on a mission to create sustainable products from plastic waste and was the second place winner of the initial Mombasa Plastics Prize phase. They aim to collaborate with waste collectors to create a recycling facility in Mombasa that offers fair pricing for the plastic waste they collect.
-
Oceania Pacesetters
Team Oceania Pacesetter is focused on fighting plastic pollution by creating simple devices that intercept plastic waste and was the third place winner of the initial Mombasa Plastics Prize phase. With peddlers and an anchored net, they collect debris directly from the ocean. The collected plastics are then repurposed to create art installations, DIYs, and other creative projects.
-
Team Furies
Team Furies has set out a mission to educate children and potentially adults about managing marine plastic waste through a behaviour change campaign leveraging board games. Their approach focuses on not only educating children but also providing entertainment and a learning experience. They are confident that this positive shift in behaviour will extend to parents and communities as a whole.
-
Rafiki Peps
Rafiki Peps has embarked on a mission to motivate communities in the Likoni Sub-county area and throughout Mombasa County to decrease the amount of plastic waste flowing into local water bodies. As part of the initial phase of the Mombasa Plastics Prize, they introduced the ‘Plastiki ni Gold’ initiative, which involved gathering waste from households in informal settlements in Mombasa and conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns and community cleanup activities.
-
Team Boma
Team Boma is committed to establishing a clean and plastic-free environment by reimagining the systems of plastic use and collection. Their solution aims to use technology to simplify and formalise waste collection in communities. They want to generate sustainable revenue through a subscription-based model, product promotion, and sales via an e-commerce platform.
-
Eco-Print Generations
Team Eco-Print Generations is determined to fight plastic pollution with the use of the groundbreaking Poliformer. This high-fidelity prototype effectively transforms single-use plastic bottles into premium-quality 3D printing filaments. Beyond its environmental benefits in reducing marine plastic waste, this innovative technology empowers local communities by providing them with a sustainable income source.
-
Plas-Tech
Plas-Tech is striving to tackle the pressing issue of plastic waste mismanagement through a technology converting plastic waste into clean and affordable cooking gas. This innovative solution not only helps alleviate plastic pollution but also offers a sustainable energy source. Moreover, it actively engages youth from informal settlements in Mombasa in the collection and processing of plastic waste.
-
Eco-Building Solutions
Eco Building Solutions is motivated to convert plastic waste into durable plastic panels, known as “Eco-poles”. This versatile solution has the potential to supplant traditional construction materials and serve as the building blocks for sturdy temporary structures, including refugee camps and business stalls, as well as essential community facilities like public restrooms.
Why are we doing this?
Tackling the widespread issue of marine plastic waste in Mombasa County is at the heart of this initiative. With only 52 percent of waste collected by formal services and 20 percent of daily waste being plastic, informal settlements in the county are severely impacted by inadequate waste management services.
Beyond reducing plastic waste, the MPP Incubator aims to inspire Mombasa County residents to reduce plastic waste, whilst also benefiting and creating new jobs.
